The Diabetes mortality rate for Latinos living in Chicago is two times that of the rest of the nation. Despite national efforts to improve screening and treatment for Diabetes our Latino community continues to disproportionately bear the burden of this disease. We believe that with the immediate action to improve health policies access and quality of care as well as aggressive culturally appropriate prevention approaches we can improve Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes in Illinois and narrow the disparity in mortality.

Recent development in medical research reveals insight to the pre diabetic state which is referred to as Metabolic Syndrome. This condition is being detected increasing in Latino community such as Mexicans and Puerto Ricans. Our focus is to shed light on these recent developments in detecting a pre diabetic state – Metabolic Syndrome and preventive health measures that can be taken to halt it’s progression in our communities.

A Metabolic Syndrome Advisory committee has been established with the purpose of addressing Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes health policies and the state of healthcare delivery in our Latino communities. To this end the Latino Metabolic Syndrome Advisory Committee iniated Mejorando la Salud de Nuestra Familia: entendiendo el Sindromo Metabolico y la Diabetes.
